Description: Deep sea fishing in Venice Florida often results in a battle with an Amberjack. Amberjack have a dark stripe (variably present) extends from nose to in front of dorsal fin and "lights up" when fish is in feeding mode; no scutes; soft dorsal base less than twice the length of the anal fin base. Food Value: Wonderful fresh or smoked.

Where Found: OFFSHORE species associated with rocky reefs, debris, and wrecks, typically in 60 - 240 feet of water; sometimes caught NEARSHORE in south Florida; juveniles associated with floating objects and may occur in water less than 30 feet deep.

Size: Common to 40 pounds.

Florida Amberjack Record: 142 lbs.

Remarks: Amberjack are the largest of the jacks; thought to spawn OFFSHORE throughout most of the year; feeds on squid, fish, and crustaceans.

Description: A Charter Fishing favorite in South Florida. The great barracuda is brownish or bluish gray on the dorsum and upper side, with a greenish cast shading to silvery on the sides and a white belly. The upper side may have 18-23 dark bars most often observable when the fish is resting or over a variegated substrate. The black spots on the lower sides of the great barracuda distinguish it from other species of barracuda. The second dorsal fin, anal, and caudal fins are violet to black with whitish tips.

Food Value: Excellent. Large Barracuda from tropical waters possibly carry the dangerous toxin ciguatera. Advisable to eat only the small ones - up to 5 pounds.

Where found: The entire Gulf of Mexico. Moving South to warmer waters during the winter.

Size: Common 5 - 15 pounds.

Barracuda Fishing Techniques: Casting, Drifting, Still Fishing and Trolling.

Remarks: Great Barracuda feed on an array of prey including fish such as jacks, grunts, groupers, snappers, small tunas, mullets. Barracudas have a large gape and very sharp teeth, enabling them to feed on large fish by chopping them in half. An opportunistic predator, great barracuda feed throughout the water column. Generally a diurnal fish, great barracuda locate their prey largely by sight. The body plan of the great barracuda is designed for speed and it is estimated that top speed for the species may be as fast as 36 mph (58 kph). Description: Florida Tuna Fishing off Venice Florida is a fishing trip to be remembered. The Blackfin Tuna has a bluish-black back with gray to silver sides and a white belly. A broad, brown stripe is located along the upper portion of the eye. There is a prominent yellow to golden-colored lateral band present on the sides. Small iridescent areas located on the sides of the abdomen are silvery. This area is sometimes marked with vertical rows of pale dots along with slightly elongate spots between these rows.

Food Value: Excellent. The "filet mignon" of fish. Great for Sushi.

Where Found: Found offshore in warmer water during summer months, on or near the surface usually near offshore reefs, along current lines over reefs and banks.

Size: Common 10 to 30 pounds.

Description: Shark Fishing in Florida The blacktip shark is dark gray/blue to brown above, and white below with a distinct white band across the flank. The black tips found on the pectoral fins, first and second dorsals, pelvic fins, and lower caudal lobe are very apparent, though they tend to fade with age. Food Value: Very good.

Remarks: The blacktip shark primarily feeds on small schooling fish such as herring, sardines, menhaden, mullet, and anchovies, but also eats many other bony fish. Description: Gulf of Mexico Fishing for Dolphin is a long beautiful day spent deep in the blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Dolphin also called Mahi Mahi are bright greenish blue above, yellow on sides, with capability of flashing purple, chartreuse, and a wide range of other colors. The single dark dorsal fin extends from just behind the head to the tail; anal fin margin concave and extending from anus to tail.

Description: Gulf of Mexico bottom fishing for Gag Grouper is a day of fun that won't soon be forgotten. Gag Grouper make for one delicious meal. Gag Grouper are bottom dwellers that are brown and gray in color with dark markings on their sides. They are often confused with black grouper.

Food Value: Very good eats! Excellent firm white flesh with little red.

Description: Venice Florida Snook fishing is awesome year round. Snook put up a fight that will satisfy any anglers needs. Snook have a distinct lateral line; high, divided dorsal fin; sloping forehead; large mouth, protruding lower jaw; grows much larger than other snook; pelvic fin yellow.

Food Value: Snook are among the best. A favorite of many anglers.

Where found: From central Florida south, usually INSHORE in coastal and brackish waters, along mangrove shorelines, seawalls, and bridges; also on reefs and pilings NEARSHORE.

Size: Most catches 5 to 8 pounds.

Snook Fishing Techniques: Light spinning rod with live bait or artificials under lighted docks at night or drifting the flats during the day.

Remarks: Florida Snook spawn primarily in summer; cannot tolerate water temperatures below 60 degrees F; can tolerate wholly fresh or saltwater; schools along shore and in passes during spawning season. Description: Charter Boat Fishing trips from Clearwater, FL and Tampa Bay, Florida south are almost always going to produce Spanish Mackerel. Spanish Mackerel have a color of green on the back, shading to silver on sides, golden yellow irregular spots above and below lateral line; front of dorsal fin black; lateral line curves gently to base of tail.

Food Value: Great broiled or skinned and fried. Good smoked too.

Where Found: Entire Gulf of Mexico especially over grass beds and reefs; absent from north Florida waters in winter.

Size: Average catch less than 2 pounds (20-22 inches).
